Richard Rodgers, Jr. (May 3, 1902-December 26, 1979) was an American composer of musical theatre. He wrote more than 400 songs for the Broadway stage and is best known today for his songwriting partnership with the lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II. He received forty-three Academy Award nominations and won eight Oscars for Best Original or Adapted Score
He was the first composer to win Best Original Score three times. His lengthy compositions include over one hundred musicals, including fifteen full-length operettas, two ballet shows, and two symphonies. His musicals include Oklahoma!, Carousel, The King and I, South Pacific, The Sound of Music, The Longest Yard, Hello Dolly! and A Little Night Music.
